Songwriter, Playwright, Author

Biography

Carl E. Bolte, Jr., was born in Kansas City on February 4, 1929. The son of musical parents, he grew up in the mid-Missouri town of Slater and studied the piano at the ripe young age of four. This early background developed him as a contest-winning flutist and church organist while in high school.

Carl graduated from Kansas City’s Southwest High School in 1947, then fronted a popular swing band while attending the University of Missouri. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1951 (and a second degree in economics in 1955), then served as a surface warfare officer aboard the USS Estes in the Korean and Vietnam theaters. With thirty-one years of service, Captain Bolte was commanding officer of the Kansas City Naval Reserve and had several Pentagon tours.

If Carl is not a man for all seasons, it is difficult to find any that he has missed. He is the former owner of a real estate firm and bank director, past chairman of Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army board member, past secretary of Starlight Theatre, Rotary president, church life deacon, and donor of 185 pints of blood. Carl is the owner of Holly Productions.

Multi-talented, he is—of course—a songwriter, playwright, theatrical director and record producer. Carl served as a faculty member of  the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music.  He is the author of the textbook
Successful Songwriting.and the Songwriters Creative Matrix songwriting tool.

Carl has written five plays, eleven musicals and many hymns, pop, jazz, collegiate, barbershop, theatrical and fraternal songs. He is the composer of the Kansas City Royal professional baseball team's fight song
(A Royal Welcome) and a fight song for the University of Missouri (Give a Cheer for Mizzou’s Tigers). His concert band marches dedicated to the United States Postal Service (We’re the U.S. Postal Service) and a patriotic march dedicated to U.S. armed forces members (Thank You For Your Service) have been published by BRS Music in Indianapolis. He also composed and produced singer Marilyn Maye’s original album, “Marilyn...the most.”
